For over twenty years, John Collings has been working in the medical technology and
pharmaceutical industry to improve healthcare and patient outcomes. In 2016, John joined Stryker’s European leadership team in the United Kingdom, today, he’s the President of our Asia Pacific region based in Singapore. Over the last eight years, John’s Stryker journey has led him
through multiple roles across Europe and Asia. In his current role, John is dedicated to driving and developing high-performing teams while embracing diversity and inclusion. We had the chance to connect with John to learn more about his experiences.
Hear from him as he shares five tips on his career growth, and what shapes him as a leader.
1. Find your voice
Early in John’s career, he was advised to find his voice and share his ideas. While this was not something that came naturally to him, he realized he was holding back valuable insights. Speaking up made him feel valued and showed that his opinions count. Today, John encourages everyone to find their voice and for leaders to support others in doing the same.
2. Embrace non-linear career paths
John shared: “I believe that career paths don’t need to be vertical, and that breadth of experience is more important than rushing to get to the top.” Twice, he took a “step down” to learn new skills and business areas. These decisions, though tough, added richness to his resume and eventually added to the growth of his career. Broad experiences have made him a more rounded leader.
3. Curiosity is key in leadership
There can be a misconception that leadership is about calling the shots. John believes that the best leaders are curious and seek alternative viewpoints before making decisions. They surround themselves with trusted advisors to make informed choices. Being open to different perspectives strengthens decision-making and team cohesion.
4. Be kind to yourself
Having faced challenging situations and demands as a leader, John emphasizes the importance of going the extra mile for the team but also taking time to recharge and reflect. He encourages leaders to be proud of their impact and prioritize self-care. “Remember that you play a critical role within your team and need to build in time to recharge, think and reflect so that you can be your best self for you and your team.”
5. Prioritize talent development
At Stryker, growing and developing talent is a key part of the culture. With John’s support, Stryker recently launched the Global Assignment Program in Asia Pacific where talent from across Asia-Pacific will spend several months with our Global Divisions. John believes that “through this program, we are able to foster cross-cultural exchange and bring diverse perspectives to the table, in turn enhancing collaboration and understanding and ensuring that our teams have the skills to meet our customers’ needs, wherever they are in the world.”
