At Stryker, we recognize the immense value veterans bring to the workforce. Leadership, teamwork and problem-solving are just a few of the skills that seamlessly translate from military service to civilian careers. Through programs like SkillBridge, we provide service members with the opportunity to explore new career paths while leveraging their unique strengths.
A military leader in transition

After 20 years of service in the U.S. Army Infantry, Jason, a former SkillBridge intern, was ready for a new challenge. Throughout his military career, he held multiple leadership roles, managing operations, logistics, training, and movement planning for large teams. His experience also included multiple combat tours and time overseas working with foreign military sales. As he approached retirement, he was eager to find a career that allowed him to lead, problem-solve and make an impact.
Discovering SkillBridge and Stryker
He learned about the SkillBridge program during his transition but wasn’t immediately drawn to any of the approved opportunities. Instead of settling, he used his network to explore options aligned with his strengths and interests. A former colleague introduced him to Stryker, where he connected with leaders who recognized his potential. That introduction led to a SkillBridge internship, giving him hands-on experience in operations and the opportunity to apply his leadership skills in a corporate setting.

During his internship, he quickly realized that Stryker’s fast-paced, mission-driven culture complimented his military experience. The collaborative environment, focus on problem-solving and shared commitment to excellence made the transition smoother.
"What stood out to me was the similarity between the military and Stryker’s fast-paced, high-achieving environment. Everyone is mission-driven, working toward a common goal, and pushing each other to be better. I knew I wanted to be a part of that long-term."
Staying connected and finding the right opportunity
Although a full-time role wasn’t immediately available at the end of his internship, Jason stayed connected with the people he met at Stryker. He continued to build his skills and gain experience in other roles while keeping in touch with his mentors. A year later, when the right leadership position opened, he was top of mind for the hiring team and successfully returned to Stryker.
4 key lessons Jason learned entering the civilian workforce
1. Be humble.
Your military experience is valuable, but it’s up to you to translate it into something employers can understand.
2. Be persistent.
You might not land a full-time role right away. Keep networking, keep learning and don’t get discouraged.
3. Choose a company that aligns with your values.
Finding the right cultural fit is essential for long-term success and career satisfaction.
4. Leverage your leadership skills.
If you’ve led people in the military, that’s a skill companies need. Leadership isn’t just about authority—it’s about trust, teamwork and problem-solving.
Why SkillBridge was the right choice

"Looking back, SkillBridge was one of the best decisions I made during my transition. It gave me an inside look at an industry I knew nothing about, introduced me to a company that valued my skills, and ultimately set me on the path to a fulfilling civilian career. For any service member considering SkillBridge, my advice is simple: take the leap. The right opportunity is out there—you just have to find it."
